[To know oneself the troubled times]
ewuh aya ing pambudi
[is to know trouble in one's mind]

[yet if one does not,]
boya kaduman melik
[one finds no share]
kaliren wekasanipun
[and so starves at last.]
dilalah karsa Allah
[Yet thus is God's will:]
begja-begjane kang lali
[happy perhaps are those who forget themselves,]
luwih begja kang eling
[happier still those who are]
lawan waspada
[aware and careful.]

padu-padune kapengin
[fact is he really wants it.]
nggih mekoten Paman Dhoplang
[Ain't that right, Paman Dhoplang?"]
bener ingkang angarani
["True enough, who say that."]

[But within]
sajatine nyamut-nyamut

wis tuwa arep apa
